Job Title:   Assistant Camp Director

Summer Location: La Selva Beach, California
Year Round Location: South Peninsula Bay Area, California
Reports to:   Camp Director

Position Purpose:
Camp Ramah in Northern California is looking to hire a full-time Assistant Camp Director to oversee camper recruitment; to hire, supervise, and support staff; to engage young adult alumni; to oversee the camp’s summer program; and to work closely with the Camp Director and Camp Ramah senior staff to grow and improve the new camp. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, organizational, and pedagogical skills as well as vast camp and Jewish community experience.

Essential Job Functions:

Primary Roles and Responsibilities – Year Round

Cultivate Young Leaders & Potential Staff:

  • Responsible for recruiting and hiring the camp’s summer staff
  • Oversee the design and implementation of summer staff training
  • Develop and work with a network of young professional Ramah alumni to plan and implement programs, provide institutional support, and strengthen the Ramah young professional leadership network

Camper Recruitment and Community Events

  • Meet and maintain relationships with potential and enrolled camper families in a variety of settings
  • Build and track relationships with potential and enrolled camper families at recruitment events and out in the community
  • Oversee year round programming; plan and execute creative, engaging programs that align with our mission and specialty track program offerings
  • Be a liaison between camper families and other year round support staff

Project Coordination:

  • Maintain organized short and long term budgets, testimonials, project management timelines, and metrics for year round programming, recruitment, and retention
  • Work with Director of Communications to coordinate social media and other publicity around year round programming and other Ramah happenings in the community
  • Maintain detailed database of camper and staff information (Campminder)
  • Be a positive and dedicated member of the year round staff team

 

Primary Roles and Responsibilities – Summer Responsibilities

Supervision of Summer Program & Programmatic Staff

  • Organize & implement overall camp program and new camp initiatives; ensure program goals are being met
  • Monitor camp activities, offer feedback and support to counselors and specialists in creating a safe and supportive camp environment
  • Work in tandem with Camp Director to resolve conflicts drawing on camp values, policies, and procedures
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of the camp and the planning andimplementation of pre and post summer programs (including staff training week)
  • Evaluate summer program, suggest and implement changes in partnership with year round staff team
  • Supervise, mentor, and train camp staff, including members of senior staff
  • Run meetings and ongoing training workshops for counselors and other groups of staff in partnership with other senior staff throughout the summer

Summer Leadership

  • At all times, maintain a professional, approachable presence as a leader within the camp community with respect to role modeling of institutional principles and Jewish values, supervision and accountability for all rules and procedures, and dedication in all respects to the camp’s mission and vision.
  • Be a Jewish role model for camp – teach, mentor, deliver divrei Torah, use Hebrew, and lead davening as fitting
  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and our camp’s values for campers and staff
  • Communicate and coordinate with parents during the summer season – regarding both positive feedback and issues as they arise
  • Consistently strive to improve – be open to giving and receiving feedback

Perform any other reasonable duties as directed by the Camp Director for the successful operation of the camp

Ideal Candidates Have:

  • Camp supervisorial experience
  • Experience in the development and delivery of educational programs for Jewish youth
  • Outstanding ability to work independently, proactively, and as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, positivity, and a commitment to serve Jewish youth
  • Ability to train, motivate, support, share insights & ideas with, and supervise staff
  • Exceptional communication & customer service skills
  • Strong knowledge of Jewish practice and the Hebrew language
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR or the ability to become certified

 

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe camper/staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers and staff in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
